SUMMARY:Bozeman\, MT - Retrofit Installer Technician: Mechanical Systems
DESCRIPTION:Retrofit Installer Technician: Mechanical Systems\nCourse Description\nThis course covers residential weatherization practices for installers\, with emphasis on assessment\, troubleshooting\, and improvement of mechanical systems such as furnaces\, boilers\, domestic hot water systems\, and ventilation systems. Skills taught include combustion analysis\, assessment of ventilation systems\, and pressure diagnostics at the shell and ductwork. The companion course (RIT Building Shell 101) covers insulation\, air-sealing\, and exterior repairs. Both courses are aligned with the NREL Job Task Analysis for Crew Leader (that now includes RIT). \nThis course immerses students in practice scenarios. Upon completion of the class\, students will have hands-on experience performing the most common tasks needed to assess and improve common mechanical systems. \nCEUs\nThis course includes 22.5 contact hours and can qualify as 22.5 continuing education units (CEUs) toward Home Energy Professional Recertification. \nCourse Objectives\n\nSelect appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for assessment and remediation tasks\nEvaluate and improve the performance of heating and domestic hot water systems\nTroubleshoot and repair simple HVAC issues\nPerform advanced pressure diagnostics of building shells and duct systems\, and use findings to specify typical air-sealing tasks\nEvaluate and improve the performance of mechanical ventilation systems\nDemonstrate basic equipment and tool maintenance\n\nOrganization of Course\nThis is a lecture-lab course. Lecture topics are presented in the classroom setting followed by hands-on practice in the lab. The class is appropriate for students who have had a basic introduction to weatherization training and are ready for advanced “hands-on” training. Student participation in discussions in the classroom and in the lab exercises is very important. This course has a written final exam and student participation is graded as pass/fail. \nGrading Criteria and Passing Score\nThe final exam is a group participation exam taken electronically. Group exams better engage students and allow students the opportunityto discuss questions and answers with each other and instructors. Exams are not graded but rather instructors ensure each student leaveswith an understanding of course content. \nStudents receive course credit through attendance and group participation throughout class. \nAudience\n\nPrivate Contractors\nProgram Managers\nWeatherization Professionals\nBuilding Managers\n\nCourse Fees\n\n$725 for the public\nFree for associates of the Montana Weatherization Workforce\n\nFor additional information contact the Center at classes@weatherization.org or you can call (406) 586-0070. \n  \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Webinar - How to Go Electric For Renters
DESCRIPTION:How to Go Electric For Renters\nLearn about the energy efficient options available to help renters go electric. \nAs a renter\, it may be hard to fully electrify without your landlord’s help. But you don’t have to own your home to go electric! There are many efficient options available to renters\, and because the equipment tends to be portable\, you can take it with you when you move. \nWe will highlight the options for heating and cooling\, cooking\, yard care\, clean renewable electricity and transportation—solutions that are all available to renters. From room heat pumps to portable induction cooktops\, you can turn your rental into a more comfortable\, efficient home with improved indoor air quality. In addition\, we will discuss what is happening in multifamily building electrification\, the policies which will mandate this in the future and learnings from pilot projects. \nJoin us for a 45-minute webinar in which we’ll delve into electrification for renters: What are the best portable options for efficient space heating and cooling? How much do portable induction cooktops cost\, and how do they perform? What other kitchen solutions are available to avoid using a gas range? What are your options for cleaning up your electric supply? What is the best way to charge your EV as a renter? What are other ways to electrify and save energy? How can you talk to your landlord about electrification? What are the impediments to electrifying rental properties? What has been learned about multifamily electrification through pilot projects? \nThis webinar is part of the Electrify Now “Go Electric!” series developed in partnership with LEARN. Find more Go Electric! webinars with information and tips on other important electrification topics here. \nExplore free courses on energy efficiency and electrification with The LEARN Program. Our past registrants have benefitted tremendously from the interactive sessions with Dr. Lstiburek where questions are encouraged. Because of that\, we limit attendance to 50 or so. Each $595.00 series consists of 4 afternoons of instruction. Upon completion of the seminar\, members of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) will receive 16 LU|HSW posted directly to the AIA Provider website. \nThe time for the sessions will be from 1:00-5:00 pm EST. \nDr. Joseph Lstiburek will discuss building science principles (such as the control of heat\, air\, and moisture and IAQ) and show you how to apply them to low-energy enclosure design\, advanced HVAC systems\, forensic investigations\, and the repair and retrofit of existing buildings. \nThe Fundamentals class has been attended by thousands of builders\, architects\, engineers\, building science consultants\, building code officials\, facility managers\, building product manufacturers\, and government officials. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\nSession One\n1:00 pm – 5:00 pm\n\nSession Two\n1:00 pm – 5:00 pm\n\n\nEnvironmental Separation\nThe Myth of the Dew Point\n\n\nDefinition of a Building\nRoofs Vented and Unvented\n\n\nThe Effect of Climate\nHygric Buoyancy\n\n\nThe Perfect Wall\nIce Dams\n\n\nThe Water Molecule\nBasements\n\n\nRelative Humidity and Vapor Pressure\nCrawlspaces Vented and Unvented\n\n\nAir Flow and Vapor Diffusion\nSlabs and Flooring\n\n\nRain\n\n\n\nCapillarity\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSession Three\n1:00 pm – 5:00 pm\n\nSession Four\n1:00 pm – 5:00 pm\n\n\nStucco Failures\nRetrofits\n\n\nPressure and IAQ\nMass Buildings\n\n\nBuildings as 3-D Airflow Networks\nFreeze Thaw\n\n\nControlling Pressures and Pathways\nInterior Foundation Retrofits\n\n\nStack Effect and Compartmentalization\nHistoric Building Limitations\n\n\nHVAC\nFrame Buildings\n\n\nPart Load and Humidity Control\nDeep Energy Retrofits\n\n\nCentral Systems vs. Distributed Systems\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nREGISTER HERE
