Webinar – Cold Climate Room Heat Pump Field Test Results
Cold Climate Room Heat Pump Field Test Results
Researchers at WSU Energy Program conducted a field test of 26 cold climate, 9kBTU variable capacity window-mountable room heat pumps from two different manufacturers. Single- and multi-family homes in Oregon, Washington and Montana were recruited for participation, with each residence receiving one heat pump for self-installation. The primary research objective was to evaluate their suitability as a DIY system for homeowners and renters. Research included monitoring runtime, supply air temperature, and usage qualities while working with participants to understand challenges and experiences in both heating and cooling seasons. Results were used to define operational use cases for energy savings modeling that provide estimates of energy savings relative to room air conditioners and electric heaters.
